Biography |
|
A tall, squared-jawed, attractive leading man, Matthew Davis
made his screen debut essaying twins in the middling horror
flick "Urban Legends: The Final Cut" (2000). Since the
emphasis was on frightening the audience, the movie didn't
exactly provide much of a showcase for the Utah native. He
fared somewhat better as an enlistee with literary
aspirations in the Joel Schumacher-directed "Tigerland"
(also 2000). Here, Davis held his own in an ensemble of
talented actors, but co-star Colin Farrell walked off with
the lion's share of praise. Still, Davis' portrayal of Jim
Paxton (clearly a stand-in for one of the screenwriters)
proved earnest and effective. He was back in a military
setting in a role created especially for him in Michael
Bay's large-scale WWII drama "Pearl Harbor" (2001). Having
survived a week of military training at a US Army boot camp,
Davis gave his all in the role of a fighter pilot, but he
was somewhat overshadowed by his more high profile co-stars
(Ben Affleck, Josh Hartnett) and the film's big-budget
special effects. Later that year, though, Davis had the
opportunity to display his thespian skills playing an
uptight preppy who is the object of affection of a
determined Beverly Hills girl (Reese Witherspoon) in the
comedy "Legally Blonde". As the stiff and stuffy frat boy
turned law student, he proved a nice foil for Witherspoon's
ditsy character. Further stretching as an actor, he next
portrayed a gay mechanic in the ensemble comedy-drama "Lone
Star State of Mind" (2002). He was back in military mode for
what would prove his most demanding role to date, that of an
American officer on a submarine that appears to have been
invaded by a mysterious creature in the WWII-era thriller
"Below" (lensed 2001). |
