Biography |
Joseph Anthony Barton (born 2 September 1982 in Liverpool,
England), commonly known as Joey Barton, is an English
footballer from Huyton who currently plays in midfield for
Newcastle United.
Barton grew up in Huyton, a town within the Metropolitan
Borough of Knowsley, in Merseyside. A boyhood Everton
supporter, the player he idolised was Peter Reid, who played
for Everton during the 1980s.
His parents split up when he was 14 and consequently he went
to live with his father at his grandmother's house. He has
since stated that the influence of his grandmother helped
him to stay away from the drug culture present in Huyton[2]
and paid tribute to his father for instilling a work ethic
into him. His father, also named Joseph, was a roofer.
He excelled at sports as a child, representing his school at
a variety of different sports at school. He left school with
ten GCSEs.
Barton is known for his hotheadedness and sometimes gets
into on-field confrontations. Off pitch, he has been known
to be very outspoken in his opinions. Interviewers have
described him as open, self-critical and ambitious.
Barton is a patron of the Tamsin Gulvin Fund, a charity set
up to support people that have addiction problems but are
without the financial support to benefit from. He was
appointed with this role by Tony Adams, who had been
impressed with Barton's attitude following his involvement
in the Sporting Chance clinic. He has also taken part in a
celebrity cricket match for charity, to help fund a new
children's rehabilitation unit at a hospital in Manchester.
He is good friends with boxer Ricky Hatton and in the past
has travelled to the United States to support him in a
fight. He has dated glamour model Amanda Harrington.
Barton has also found himself at the centre of contoversy
outside of football. In May 2005 he broke the leg of a
35-year-old pedestrian whilst driving his car 2 a.m. through
Liverpool city centre. On 13 March 2007, Barton was arrested
on suspicion of criminal assault and criminal damage after
an alleged argument with a taxi driver in Liverpool, while
going to his hotel after a match.
His half brother, Michael Barton, was sentenced to seventeen
years imprisonment for his involvement in the racially
motivated murder of Anthony Walker, in 2005. Joey had
earlier made a public appeal for his half brother to come
forward and help with the police investigation, following
the attack and had also made a series of calls to Michael,
enquiring about his involvement in the incident. |
