Biography |
Born in Montebello, California on February 20, 1978, Javier
(Jay) Hernandez Jr. grew up in a strong family unit, led by
parents Isis and Javier. After attending Don Bosco Technical
Institute in Rosemead, California, Hernandez began leaning
toward a career in acting.
Though his initial efforts to make headway in the industry
were unsuccessful, his life changed after he was noticed by
an agent in an elevator. He started out on the wholesome TV
comedy series Hang Time in 1998, and ended up staying there
for three seasons. After leaving the show in 2000, Hernandez
made his big-screen debut as one of the leads in Living the
Life, a film about East L.A.'s street gangs.
In 2001, Hernandez finally broke into the mainstream with
Crazy/Beautiful, a romantic film in which he shared the
screen with Kirsten Dunst. Supporting roles in the thriller
Joy Ride and the Dennis Quaid-led drama The Rookie followed,
earning Hernandez a reputation as a strong character actor.
After appearing in two low-key films in 2004 -- he played
the lead in Nomad and was the lone bright spot in the action
flick Torque -- Hernandez shone in two box-office successes,
Friday Night Lights and Ladder 49.
He continued to raise his stock in 2005, playing the lead in
the horror film Hostel, as well as the title role in the
straight-to-video release of Carlito's Way: Rise to Power. |
